Australia’s new pavilion for the Venice Biennale has been officially completed by the Australia Council for the Arts. Designed by Australian practice Denton Corker Marshall, the granite-clad building is the first pavilion to be built in Venice in the 21st century, and replaces Philip Cox’s 1988 structure. The pavilion is to welcome its first visitors from May 9, as part of the 56th International Art Exhibition, with the work of artist Fiona Hall comprising its inaugural exhibition.

Conceptualized as a white box circumscribed within a black box, Denton Corker Marshall’s pavilion employs a contemporary aesthetic that blurs the lines between architecture and a sculptural object. Firmly planted in the historic landscape of the Giardini, the dark facade features operable panels that can be opened or closed depending on particular exhibition requirements.
Since 1954, Australia has enjoyed a rich and distinctive history at the Venice Biennale, featuring the works of iconic artists including Sidney Nolan, Russell Drysdale, and William Dobel. The new pavilion is one of only 29 in the Giardini, and is a strong statement of Australia’s presence at the landmark international cultural event.
